FMLA & ADAA Autism and Employment
Bonnie L. Zampino
Experience Autism is a groundbreaking, hands-on, experiential learning workshop that is tailored to fit educators, parents, students, first responders, employers and the general public. This workshop walks the participant through many activities that simulate some of the sensory and communication challenges that those with autism face daily. For the HR Professional, Experience Autism - ADAAA and FMLA assists in the understanding of autism as a disability and what kinds of accommodations can be made for with autism spectrum disorders as well as their caregivers. Reviewing the potential pitfalls of FMLA and ADAAA compliance, Human Resources staff will gain specific insight into how the spike in autism diagnosis impacts both employee and employer.
Bonnie is the founder and President of A Special Space, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Harpers Ferry, WV.
Bonnie had been in the HR profession for over 20 years, working in HR management in higher education and in both small and large corporations. When she became the mother of a child with autism, she began to experience the special challenges that parents with special needs children face at home and at work and set out to improve life for those impacted by Autism.
As Bonnie began to work within the community, she was asked to educate the public about autism. She developed a ground-breaking, experiential learning module called Experience Autism. Participants, which have included students at Shepherd University, autism specialists, Virginia and West Virginia teachers, students, church group and HR Professionals, engage in activities that mirror the sensory and communication challenges of those with autism. Bonnie’s philosophy is that through personalizing the experience, true understanding occurs. True understanding promotes true inclusion.
Because of her background in HR, Bonnie developed a training to assist fellow HR professionals in understanding those with autism spectrum disorders entering the workforce. She also trains managers and HR practitioners on the need work with families of special needs individuals and how FMLA and the ADAAA impact employees who face these unique challenges.
Bonnie has a BS degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis and received her SPHR certification in 2000. Bonnie lives in Harpers Ferry, WV with her son, Brendan.
