Conococheague Institute to Host Two-Day Living History Event,
Farm Life in the 1820s, in Welsh Run, PA
The Conococheague Institute will host a two-day living history event, Farm Life in the 1820′s, Saturday, August 16 (9AM-5PM) and Sunday, August 17 (10AM-3PM), at historic Rock Hill Farm, 12995 Bain Road, Mercersburg, PA. There will be a parking fee of $5 per vehicle charged at the gate.
Interpreters of the Historical Interpretive Branch of the W.S. Hancock Society will present educational programs that take visitors back to an earlier time in the history of South Central Pennsylvania. Events of the weekend will center on two buildings on The Rock Hill farm site: the Negley Log House and the Piper Family Cabin/Blacksmith Shop
On-going programming throughout the weekend will allow visitors to explore day-to-day life in the 1820s:
The W. S. Hancock Society is dedicated to educating the public about the life and times of Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. Their Interpretive Branch focuses on W. S. Hancock’s formative years in the earliest years of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Immediately following Saturday’s programming, musical guests The Weavers (Bill and Joyce Weaver) will host the Institute’s first-ever Tavern Night in the Welsh Barrens Visitor Center, August 16 from 5-7PM. Guests are welcome to unwind and share some laughs. The Weavers will perform period music tavern-style. An assortment of games will be available, and guests are encouraged to bring a picnic or snacks and their favorite drinks! A $5 donation will be requested at the door.
Food will be available for purchase on site.

- Visit a typical home of the time and learn about the day to day lives of those early Pennsylvanians.
- Learn about early 19th century cooking and preparing a family meal.
- Converse with a Farmer to learn about what it took to run a farm in the 1820′s and how other businesses were developed from that farm to serve the surrounding community.
- Learn about the tobacco trade and discover how pipe tobacco and cigars were made.
- Visit with a Cabinet Maker and learn about his trade in the early 19th century.
- See a Pennsylvania Long Rifle and learn about game hunting in the 1820s
- Learn about traveling ministers of Early America
